Call (765) 288-1874A new room should feel like it was always part of the house. 1874 Design Studio offers home additions, with the design and the build carried out as a single engagement.

Before the square footage, start with the purpose. Is someone moving in? Is a room doing two jobs and neither one well? Do you need a place to work, to gather, or to finally put things down?
Tell us the reason behind the addition. It shapes where the space wants to go and how large it needs to be more than any number does.

Most additions start with a need you can name. It might be a primary suite on the main floor, a family room with space for everyone, an in-law suite for a parent who wants to live close by, a bump-out that gives a crowded kitchen the room it has been missing, a second story or a garage. We take on all of these kinds of additions.
Whatever you are picturing, describe it by how you will use it, and we will work out the size and shape together. Space planning is part of our services, and it is where every addition begins.

You may already be picturing the thing that goes wrong with additions: a ceiling that does not match, a hallway that dead-ends, a step down for no reason, a room that reads as bolted on.
That comes from a space designed apart from the house it joins. Everything we do is design build - we do not sell design on its own and we do not hand a drawing to someone else to execute. The new rooms and the existing ones get planned as one home, because we are designing and building both sides of that connection.

Before an addition takes shape, it has to fit your property. Local zoning rules affect how close new space can come to your property lines and how much of the lot a house can cover. For homes in Muncie and unincorporated Delaware County, zoning is handled by the Delaware-Muncie Metropolitan Plan Commission. We provide the structural engineer and the building permits, and we help with the plans and information needed for zoning reviews and HOA approvals.
Your property shapes the design, too: which side of the house has room, which way the new windows face and how the addition meets the rooms it joins. If you have a copy of your survey, bring it to the consultation.

Our services include home additions, space planning and interior architecture. That means we are thinking about how you reach the new space, what you see from the doorway, and how light, ceiling height and flooring carry across the join.
Design concepts and 3D renderings give you a way to see it before it exists. The Discover phase then brings material selections into the conversation, so the finishes in the addition sit comfortably beside the ones you already live with.
Look through the project gallery and notice the finishes, the proportions and the small details that hold your attention. Save the ones you would want to see in a new space.
Screenshots and saved images are welcome at the consultation. They often describe what you like better than words do.

Design, Discover, Deliver and Difference carry the project from measurements and concepts through selections, project review and the build. For an addition, Design is where the join between the new space and the existing house gets worked out.

Adding on often changes the rooms next door. If the existing house is part of the plan, explore whole-home renovations or structural remodels. If you are weighing an addition against starting over, building a new home on your lot is the other path: a new house on land with no home on it yet, instead of more room on the house you have.
1874 Design Studio works with homeowners in Delaware, Randolph, Madison, Hamilton and Boone counties. Choose a city to start there.
Which space is on your mind?

Tell us what you love about your kitchen, what you would change and the look you are drawn to.

Begin with the bathroom you have and the changes you would like to make.

When your ideas reach across several rooms, start with the home as a whole.

What would make you want to spend more time downstairs? Picture the activities you’d like to make room for.

Walk through laundry day in your mind. What would you most like to change about the space?

Think about arriving home with your hands full. Where would you like everything to go?

Picture your ideal workday at home. What would you want around you—and what would you leave outside the door?

Considering built-ins or a fireplace remodel? Share the room and the changes you have in mind.

What would you change about the way your home is laid out? Picture the wall you would move if you could.

Design the addition and the connection to the existing home at the same time, with the people who will build it. Bring photos of the rooms it will join so that conversation can start early.
No. Anything we do is design build. The design and construction stay together, which is how the new space and the existing house get planned as one.
Not at all. Describe what you want the space to do and who will use it. Space planning is part of our services, and sizing is something to work out together.
Ask us. Every addition sits differently against the house it joins, so tell us your desired completion date and we will talk about what is realistic for yours. The date on the form is a preference to discuss, not a commitment.
An addition adds square footage to your existing house. If the rooms you have could work better with a wall opened or the layout changed, a structural remodel keeps the same footprint. Describe what you need the space to do, and we will talk through both.
That is always the goal: an addition that looks as seamless with the rest of the house as possible. We handle the addition from start to finish, outside as well as in, including the foundation, roof and siding, and you see exterior renderings of what it will look like before it is built.
Usually, yes. Most of our remodeling clients live at home while the work is underway, and our team uses site protection, air scrubbers and daily clean-up to make that as comfortable as possible. A bigger change, like adding a second story, is when some people prefer to stay elsewhere. That is up to you; if you do, we use a secure lockbox and send you updates.
It is a conversation about your project, held in your home or at our Muncie showroom. We talk through what you want to change and the scope of the work, and screenshots or saved images are welcome. Detailed measurements come later, at a field measure, once design begins.
Yes. Installation work carries a one-year workmanship warranty, and the products you select carry their manufacturers' warranties. Beyond the warranty, we stand behind our work, and taking care of our clients is a top priority. We are a division of Knapp Supply, which has been in business since 1874.

Describe the space you wish you had, where you imagine it going, and what you would like to understand before moving forward.
