Call (765) 288-1874Your renovation ideas may begin somewhere other than the kitchen or bathroom. 1874 Design Studio's services include basement, laundry, mudroom and office spaces.

How would you like to spend time downstairs: gathering together, making room for a hobby or finding a quieter place to unwind? Tell us how you use the basement now and ask about the changes you are considering.
Most of our basement projects are one of two kinds: finishing out an entire unfinished basement, or remodeling one that is already finished. Either way, it is a complete remodel, and a new bathroom or an egress window is often part of it.
Homeowners tend to ask for the same rooms downstairs: a theater room, with a media package we can help coordinate; a full bathroom; a guest bedroom with an egress window and a closet, so it can count as a true bedroom; a gym; and a kitchenette or bar. Some basements are built around family time. Others are built for hosting, with a wine room or a lounge area.
For a finished basement that no longer fits, tell us what feels dated or what the room is not doing for you. Our project gallery includes a finished basement with a bar wall and tall cabinetry, if you want to see one direction it can take.
If you plan to turn an unfinished basement into living space, the CDC recommends testing the area for radon before the renovation begins, and testing again after the work is done.

Which part of your laundry routine would you like to rethink: sorting, folding or putting things away? Describe where it happens now, along with any colors or finishes you would like to explore.
Laundry rooms work hard for their size. Think about where clothes land, where they get sorted, whether you want a utility sink and where folding happens. Cabinets, open shelves and counter space can each take on one of those jobs. Our gallery includes a laundry room with a utility sink, tile wall and open shelf, and the before-and-after further down this page shows a laundry and mudroom remodel.

What comes through the door with you: coats, shoes, bags or equipment? Describe what needs a place in your mudroom and the look you have in mind. If you are considering built-ins, ask about them as part of the conversation.
In a mudroom, built-ins often do most of the work: a locker or cubby for each person, a bench for putting on shoes, hooks for coats and bags, and a drawer or cabinet for things that should not live on the floor. Tell us who comes through that door and what they carry. For built-ins elsewhere in the house, such as bookshelves or a fireplace wall, see custom built-ins and fireplace remodels.

Is your office for focused work, video calls, shared tasks or a mix of uses? Tell us how you want to spend time there and which parts of the current room you would keep. Bring those priorities into the design conversation.
A home office has to fit your work and your house. Built-in cabinetry and shelving can keep supplies out of sight and books within reach, and the finishes you choose can tie the office to the rest of your home. Our gallery includes a home office with teal built-in cabinetry.

You may be considering just one of these rooms. If your ideas extend through the home, explore our whole-home renovations. For a conversation focused on built-ins, start with custom built-ins.

Our approach includes space planning, collaborative design concepts and 3D renderings. In Discover, material selections become part of the conversation. Deliver covers project review, followed by the build phase, Difference.

Yes. Describe the specific feature or change you are considering. Ask about its fit for your project rather than assuming every type of work is included.
Our four-phase process explains Design, Discover, Deliver and Difference, including design concepts, selections, project review and the build.
Yes. Finishing out an entire unfinished basement is one of the two basement projects we take on most, along with remodeling a basement that is already finished. Tell us how you want to use the space, and we will talk through the design, selections and build together.
No. Our basement work is a complete remodel. An egress window or a new bathroom is often part of that remodel, but we do not take on an egress window or waterproofing as a job on its own.
Often, yes. Many homes combine the two near the garage or back door, and one set of built-ins can handle both jobs. Tell us how the space is used now and what needs a place, and we will talk through whether a combined room fits your home.
It is a conversation about your project, held in your home or at our Muncie showroom. We talk through what you want to change and the scope of the work, and screenshots or saved images are welcome. Detailed measurements come later, at a field measure, once design begins.
