Call (765) 288-1874Built-ins and a fireplace can be the starting point for a different conversation about a room. 1874 Design Studio offers built-ins and fireplace remodeling. Tell us which part of your space you are considering.

What do you have in mind for the room? Share the location you are thinking about and the look that interests you. Ask us about the specific built-in idea you would like to explore.
Built-ins can do many jobs. Bookshelves around a fireplace, cabinetry and shelving in a home office, a built-in hutch in the kitchen, wine storage or a bar wall in a finished basement all start with the same question: what do you want to keep, show or hide? Our project gallery includes several of these, from built-in wine storage above walnut cabinetry to a white kitchen hutch with glass cabinet doors.
Most of our built-ins are made from WW Wood Products' semi-custom cabinetry lines, and custom options are available when a space calls for them. Because a built-in becomes part of the room, we plan it with the room. Cabinetry finishes and hardware are part of our showroom selections, so the built-in can match what is already there or stand apart from it. For lockers and benches by the back door, see our page on mudrooms and laundry rooms.

Begin with the fireplace you have and the changes you want to discuss. What appeals to you about it now? What would you like to feel different? Include questions about the particular work your idea might involve.
Think about what you want the fireplace to be in the room: a quiet backdrop or the first thing you notice. Gas inserts and conversions, stone or tile surrounds, mantels and chimney work are all within our scope. Many fireplace walls combine several of these: stone or tile, millwork such as shiplap or board and batten, a new mantel design, and built-ins to the left and right. We often add lighting, and sometimes frame in archways for the built-ins. The before-and-after further down this page shows a great-room fireplace wall before and after its remodel.
If your fireplace burns wood, keep its condition in mind as you plan the wall around it. Fire officials recommend having a wood-burning appliance, chimney and vent professionally inspected each year.

Think about how you want the detail to sit within the space. Which colors or finishes would you like to explore? Is the rest of the room part of your plan, or is this your starting point?
Our approach includes space planning, design concepts and material selections. Those are useful topics to discuss as you explain what you have in mind.

Yes. Built-ins to the left and right of a fireplace are a common part of the fireplace walls we design. They add storage and frame the fireplace at the same time. Share a photo of the wall and tell us whether you are also considering changes to the fireplace itself.
It is a conversation about your project, held in your home or at our Muncie showroom. We talk through what you want to change and the scope of the work, and screenshots or saved images are welcome. Detailed measurements come later, at a field measure, once design begins.
